Kate Royds (Price) is a Cape Town artist who earned her BA in Fine Art (Honours) from the University of Stellenbosch in 1998. She later expanded her creative expertise with a Postgraduate Diploma in "Imaging and Animation" from London Guildhall University in 2001. Over the next 18 years, Kate worked as a designer and art director while continuing to evolve her artistic practice.

Kate’s work is deeply intuitive and exploratory, reflecting the rich textures of her South African surroundings and the dynamic narratives of contemporary society. “Artists are free to have as many voices and platforms as they choose. They can express a plethora of emotions, gentle or loud,” she says—a sentiment embodied in her thought-provoking pieces that encourage viewers to see the world from new perspectives.

Fascinated by the human condition, Kate draws inspiration from the stories that shape our collective experience. Working primarily on canvas, she incorporates cotton paper, ink drawings, and oils to create works that are sculptural and organic. “The paper becomes my brush strokes,” she explains, describing her mixed-media process as a delicate interplay of colour, form, and texture. Her work becomes a dialogue between subject and medium, layered with meaning and emotion.

Kate’s recent achievements include her selection for the London Art Biennale at the Chelsea Old Town Hall in 2021, where she was one of 450 artists from 60 nations exhibiting during the global challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2022, she was a Sasol New Signatures Finalist, with her work featured among 100 national artists in the "Art Beyond Imagination" exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum, celebrating her innovative contributions to contemporary art.
